Description (last modified by khali) (diff)

I got GA-K8U Triton motherboard and I cant read temperature and voltage. Motherboard is based on ULI 1689 chipset.

sensors-detect detected that I need:
smsc47m1,i2c_isa,i2c-ali1563,lm92,ds1621,smbus-arp,smartbatt

after loading this modules I see fan spped thx to smsc47m1 lm92 and ds1621 are givie wird value -18 -36

Please do not set the Milestone field when creating tickets. It is up to us, the lm_sensors project developers, to decide what needs to be fixed before next release.

All the LM92 and DS1621 chips are obviously misdetections, you don't have these chips. The fact that sensors-detect also suggested smbus-arp and smartbatt, which are the most frequently misdetected chips, makes me guess that the SMBus itself (ALi1563) doesn't work properly. Please rmmod lm92 and ds1621 and send the complete output of sensors-detect.

Which kernel version are you running?

Here is sensor-detect output

# sensors-detect revision 1.413 (2006/01/19 20:28:00)

This program will help you determine which I2C/SMBus modules you need to
load to use lm_sensors most effectively. You need to have i2c and
lm_sensors installed before running this program.
Also, you need to be `root', or at least have access to the /dev/i2c-*
files, for most things.
If you have patched your kernel and have some drivers built in, you can
safely answer NO if asked to load some modules. In this case, things may
seem a bit confusing, but they will still work.

It is generally safe and recommended to accept the default answers to all
questions, unless you know what you're doing.

We can start with probing for (PCI) I2C or SMBus adapters.
You do not need any special privileges for this.
Do you want to probe now? (YES/no): Probing for PCI bus adapters...
Use driver `i2c-ali1563' for device 00:03.0: Acer Labs 1563
Use driver `rivatv' for device 01:00.0: GeForce2 MX
Probe succesfully concluded.

We will now try to load each adapter module in turn.
Module `i2c-ali1563' already loaded.
Load `rivatv' (say NO if built into your kernel)? (YES/no): Loading failed... skipping.
** Note: rivatv module is available at http://rivatv.sourceforge.net/
If you have undetectable or unsupported adapters, you can have them
scanned by manually loading the modules before running this script.

To continue, we need module `i2c-dev' to be loaded.
If it is built-in into your kernel, you can safely skip this.
i2c-dev is already loaded.

We are now going to do the adapter probings. Some adapters may hang halfway
 through; we can't really help that. Also, some chips will be double detected;
we choose the one with the highest confidence value in that case.
If you found that the adapter hung after probing a certain address, you can
specify that address to remain unprobed. That often
 includes address 0x69 (clock chip).

Next adapter: SMBus ALi 1563 Adapter @ 1400

Some chips are also accessible through the ISA bus. ISA probes are
typically a bit more dangerous, as we have to write to I/O ports to do
this. This is usually safe though.

I will now generate the commands needed to load the I2C modules.

To make the sensors modules behave correctly, add these lines to
/etc/modules.conf:

#----cut here----
# I2C module options
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options lm92 ignore=0,0x48,0,0x49,0,0x4a,0,0x4b,0,0x4c,0,0x4d,0,0x4e,0,0x4f
#----cut here----

To load everything that is needed, add this to some /etc/rc* file:

#----cut here----
# I2C adapter drivers
modprobe i2c-ali1563
# modprobe unknown adapter bt878 #0 [sw]
# modprobe unknown adapter NVIDIA I2C Device

OK, that's what I suspected. Your SMBus is somehow stuck and returns noise.

Driver `smsc47m1' (should be inserted):
  Detects correctly:
  * ISA bus address 0x0800 (Busdriver `i2c-isa')
Chip `SMSC 47M15x/192/997 Super IO Fan Sensors' (confidence: 9)

These chips are known to have voltage and temperature functions available through the SMBus. We need to fix your SMBus before we can access them.

Tell me what to do :)

Hello

Ok do:

  1. Compile i2c bus drivers with the debugging stuff enabled (menuconfig - drivers i2c/bus debugging)
  2. modprobe i2c-dev; modprobe i2c-ali1568;
  3. i2cdetect -y 0

It should produce quite a log to dmesg/syslog/messages. Be sure no other i2c/hwmon modules are not loaded. Attach the output. And also tell us your mail address so we can fix the "reported" field ;)

Thanks,

Regards

Here U go ... log from debug. But I dont have module name i2c-ali1568... I have i2c-ali1563... i2c-4 smbus SMBus ALi 1563 Adapter @ 1400

Why I can read fun speed form smsc47m1 ?! not form i2c-ali1563

Hello,

Please fill in the kernel version you are using. Get it with

uname -a

Command. The smsc47m1 is just fan controller. The rest like temps are probbably located on smbus which is not working properly. I will analyze the problem when I'm little free. To get start I need to know what kernel you have. Thanks,

Rudolf

Hi,

I have some idea. Lets try this: modprobe i2c-dev i2cdetect -l

should list ALI bus as #4 or change numbers bellow:

i2cdump 4 0x50 s

Now the smbus should be unblocked, try:

i2cdetect 4

If you can see some XX and on few places the numbers. it means that it works and driver needs to be fixed.

Please attach new log file, later you may run sensors-detect to see what devices are there...

Lets see if it will do what I think it should ;)

Hello after some more analysis:

i2cdump 4 0x2d

should produce something reasonable. Please attach the output/or write the message. You may find me also on IRC #linux-sensors on irc.freenode.net

Hint: you may use the { { { and } } } - without the spaces - to do the <pre> like tags R.

Changed 8 years ago by ruik

Hello again,

It seems there is not my debug output, please search the logs. Moreover it seems that it looks correct now. (as in i2cdetect.txt)

If the output looks still like it was, can you please run the sensors-detect and share its output again?

Is the output same when you move the driver back to bus 4 (change module load order)? Does it work with your original driver but without loaded proprietary nvidia driver?

The analysis have shown that the hardware is working OK but for some reason the userspace util gets wrong value.

Regards

Rudolf

I`m sorry but there is no debug information...

Same on i2c-1 and i2c-4

Does it work with your original driver but without loaded proprietary nvidia driver?

No mater loaded or not I cant see voltage and temp, fans always works.

Hi again,

after upgrade to 2.6.18 I found new module sms47m139... now I got all sensors working!

Changed 8 years ago by ruik

  • status changed from assigned to closed
  • resolution set to fixed

Hello,

I will close this ticket. It is a bit sad it started to work "mysteriously" but I hope it is just a fault of the proprietary nvidia drivers.

Regards

Rudokf

It`s not nvidia... its not mysteriously... It`s whole NEW module, first seen in kernel-2.6.18 First detected by sensors-detect 2.10.1

SMSC47M139 gives me voltage and temperature SMSC47M1 gives me fun control and speed

My kernel now is 2.6.18 +grsec +nvidia driver lm-sensors 2.10.1

thx for all

ps. I think smbus dont work on this board.
